Admissions Conversion Rate, defined
Short answer: An admissions conversion rate is the percentage of qualified inquiries that become admitted patients. Sophisticated operators measure it as a chain of stage rates, answer, VOB, assessment, scheduled, arrival, because the blended number tells you whether you have a problem while the stage rates tell you where it is.
Why It Matters
Why it matters
The blended rate is the health check leadership watches; the stage rates are the diagnostic the admissions director acts on. A center converting well below its baseline is losing admits it already paid to generate, the most expensive kind of loss.
Measurement
How it is measured
Admits ÷ qualified inquiries overall, plus each stage-to-stage rate, by source and rep, on cohorts. “Qualified” needs a written definition (right geography, level of care, and payer fit) or the denominator drifts and the number lies.
Benchmark
Benchmark and example
Benchmarks vary by payer mix and level of care, so the operative comparison is your own trailing baseline, by stage. A falling stage rate names its own culprit: answer rate points at coverage, VOB rate at workflow speed, close rate at skills and follow-up.
Common Mistakes
Common mistakes
- →One blended number with no stage breakdown
- →No written definition of a qualified inquiry
- →Judging weekly instead of on cohorts
- →Comparing against industry gossip instead of your own baseline
- →Fixing scripts when the leak is coverage, or vice versa
Improvement
How to improve it
Find the biggest stage-to-stage drop and fix that stage first, coverage and VOB speed usually move fastest. The conversion guide walks each stage.
